THIRTY SEVEN

Inside the ARU briefing room, Chalky intended to stick around until the three guys got back from Belmarsh. Most of the task force officers were either downstairs checking, clearing and cleaning weapons, or studying the files on Xavier and Serin that the Unit had accumulated in the last few months, taking a moment alone, knowing how demanding the night could prove to be.

Chalky however, was keeping to himself, a habit he’d got used to over the last few months, sitting alone while stirring some milk into a strong coffee.

As he did so, he caught his reflection in one of the internal windows. He hadn’t been here in months due to being embedded in the French-Turkish gang and also hadn’t really looked at himself much in the mirror lately.

What he saw wasn’t a pretty sight.

He’d been doing infiltration work with the French gang for five months and had been warned that working undercover could do strange things to a person’s psyche. It wasn’t playing a character like an acting job, pretending to be someone for a few hours per day. You had to be that person 24/7, without any slip-ups, but you also had to deal with the worry and stress of the possibility of being exposed and the consequences that would follow. He’d been thoroughly briefed on what to expect by a police psychologist before he’d agreed to do the job but it had still been harder than he’d ever imagined.

He looked at his sunken eyes, the dark rings around them, the sheen of cold sweat on his brow. The amount Xavier and Serin partied and the levels of cocaine they expected him to take was becoming a serious problem. He knew he was addicted, but there was nothing he could do to stop right now, not until this was over. He’d deal with it later, when this was all done, knowing he’d receive all the support he needed when the time came .

He looked up as Fox, Porter and Archer appeared from down the corridor, having returned from Belmarsh. They caught the attention of almost everyone on the upper floor, all curious to know what the outcome of that conversation had been, but the three men immediately headed over to Cobb’s office before closing the door behind them.

Watching them through the glass, Chalky focused on Archer, who hadn’t even glanced his way as he’d passed. He’d been so thrilled to see his best friend when he’d walked in earlier, but something was wrong; Archer wasn’t acting himself.

Is it him though?

Or you?

‘Ninety suspects?’ Cobb said as Fox closed the door behind him. They’d already called him from the car, providing a brief outline of what Number Three had said, but now could go into more detail.

‘Patel’s saying the mastermind is a tenth recruit from the New Year’s Eve operation,’ Porter said. ‘We thought there were nine of them that day. He’s claiming we were one off.’

‘You’re saying this could happen another eighty six times?’ Cobb said, looking at his TV screen, which was on mute, showing rolling reports concerning the crashes to date.
